The project is Uranium mining at the Kayelekera Uranium mine owned by Paladin Resources Limited - an Australian Company. The conflicts so far have been on: fears of air pollution; surface and ground water pollution; Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR); labour issues and on non-compliance with the Environmental management Act and the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi. The locals and workers at the mine have been raising complaints with the mine officials and civil society members on issues to do with occupational health and safety and low employment rate. The Civil Society members have also been concerned with issues on revenue transparency, non-compliance with the laws and regulations, corruption, implementation of the agreed CSR projects, workers exposure to radiation, pollution of surface water (North Rukuru River and Lake Malawi) and ground water, air pollution etc. The Civil Society Network on Climate Change in Malawi (CISONECC) is also concerned with the Carbon footprint of the Mine due to the diesel powered electricity generation plant.
