The town of Krompachy is a mining town, built as large metal industry complex in the 1960s. Around 10% of Krompachy’s 8,000 inhabitants are Roma, most of whom live in two neighbourhoods, around Hornádska and Družstevná streets. There is also a water stream called Hornád in the Hornádska street [4][1]. However, the settlement is adjacent to industrial mining copper (and other materials extraction and production) plant complex called Kovohuty Pribram, a.s copper smelter [4] [6].
The main pollution emission in the city of Krompachy is the copper smelter. A research was carried out in the area of the emission source from October 2009 to October 2013 has proven an increasing contamination of the following elements: Fe, Al, Mn, Zn, Pb, Cu, Cr, Cd, As) and major ions (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+ , K+ , NH4 + , SO4 2–, NO3 – , Cl– , F– ) [1].
This is due to a heavily industrial production and toxic emissions of the smelting processes of many materials: copper, aluminium, iron, gold, titanium, zinc and even uranium by the Kovohuty Pribram smetler [1] [4].
Thiese findings of the research also suggest that contamination may be more severe in the Romani settlement than in the other parts of the town, as Roma neighbourhood is close to the smelter [5].
Only in 2018 there were two fire outbreaks. The first was in August 2018, when a processing filters burned in one of the furnaces. Given the amount of fire and toxic smoke caused, the third level of alarm was declared [6]. The second fire outbreak shortly after that, in September 2018. In the second fire outbreak a processor of waste containing lead and titanium, and other toxic materials burned [6]. As it is a processor of waste it includes waste of electrical and electronic equipment as well. The company focuses on buying and collecting waste from people in the surroundings [6].
The Roma community until today (2019) remains living just next to the heavily polluting and toxic environment of the Kovohuty Pribram, a.s copper smelter [4] [5].
