There is a pattern of forced evictions of Roma people in Romania [3]. In this case, another reason for an eviction was a development of a tourist resort [2]. As argued by the ERRC, "Eforie, a Black Sea holiday resort known for its blue waters, gleaming beaches and mild summer climate". At the same time in 2013, local municipality took a decision against Roma community living in the area for forty years [1].
Due to eviction, Roma were left in temporary shelters in an abandoned school building or dormitory, both in bad conditions, without windows or electricity [4]. Since the first eviction from their homes in Eforie, Roma have been living multiple evictions later on [4].
In July 2014, ten Romani families were once again evicted from the school under the direction of the deputy mayor of Eforie and relocated to containers too small to house all members of the families. These containers again had inadequate provision for utilities and were located near an excavation site, posing further health and environmental risks to the families, including children. Three families were provided with no accommodation at all [1].
In this case of eviction from Eforie Roma were left homeless or placed on the industrial site, which is in stark contrast to the idyllic tourist beach resort of Eforie [1] [2]. The City Hall argued that this is a future housing development zone [2]. Still today, Roma are disconnected from services and from the usual work opportunities they had before. There is no public transportation but there is a school bus for children [2].
Another eviction of Roma families living in containers the government provided in first place was foreseen in 2016. However, with the joint effort of ERRC, Amnesty and Romani CRISS the last eviction was stopped and the organisations called the Romanian Government to commit to legislative changes which would prevent forced evictions of Roma [4].
Similarly, close to the industrial site where some Roma were housed, there is also an older Roma settlement situated on a former depots of a military munitions where Roma families live [2].
