Izombe community has had its share of the dehumanizing degradation of host communities natural environment ranging from oil spills on the farmlands to gas flares and toxic waste, by multi-national corporations such as Chevron. Chevron have been accused of illegal dumping of toxic waste and unabated oil spills in the area, the people demand that Chevron should take responsibility for total remediation of the area.

The Jisike Regional Development Foundation (JRDF), created out of an initiative of Izombe inhabitants, got Chevron to sign the Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMoU). 

Under the Memorandum requirements, the company built a hospital and a secondary school for girls. Still the Memorandum seems more to be instrumentalized by the company which boasts about its so-called good behavior towards the affected communities. While on the ground Chevron has not been accountable for all the oil spills it provoked in the region, severely polluting farming fertile lands. As they denounce the violation of the Memorandum by Chevron, the locals also decry the civil servants’ and governors’ flagrant corruption. The forgotten and very unsatisfied youth of the region is multiplying vandalism against the oil infrastructures. The very increased social tension has urged the launch of a new project beginning of 2016 led by the Oguta Human Rights Monitoring Committee and implemented by the Cleen Foundation for communities’ empowerment.
